Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That
As any significant honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
